How we check our facts
Where every number on this site comes from, what we check before it goes on a page, and how you can check it yourself.
The standard
Every rate, date and threshold comes from HMRC or GOV.UK. Not from another bookkeeper's blog, and not from memory. If we cannot point at the document, it does not go on the page.
The document is named on the page you read it on. At the bottom of the guides, as a link you can open. You should never have to take our word for a number.
No statistic without a source. If we cannot find a credible one, we say it without a number or leave it out.
Where HMRC is silent, we say so. We do not fill the gap with something that sounds sure. Our free tools stop and tell you when they cannot be sure.
What we check
Every source link opens. Every quote from HMRC or GOV.UK is checked word for word against the page it comes from before it goes on the site.
Quotes are matched word for word. When a page quotes HMRC, the quote is held in our own files and checked against the HMRC page it came from.
Our sums match HMRC's own worked examples. The CIS deduction calculator and the mileage calculator are tested against examples HMRC publishes, so if our answer ever differed from HMRC's printed one, the test would fail.
The CIS calendar is worked out from the rules. HMRC does not publish one, so every date to the end of 2028 is calculated, with weekends and bank holidays marked where they move a deadline.
Every change carries its own date. When a rule changed, the page says which rule, on what date, and links the HMRC page that states it.
If something looks different from HMRC
If HMRC and this site ever disagree, HMRC is right. Tell us and we will look at it straight away.
[email protected]. You do not have to be a client.
Three things you can go and check right now
Our sums against HMRC's. Take a worked example out of CIS340 Appendix D, put it into our CIS calculator, and see whether you get their answer.
Any date in our calendar. The CIS calendar to 2028 is worked out from HMRC's rules, because HMRC does not publish one. Pick a month and check it.

Being careful about dates is most of the job
We take the same care with your books as we do with these pages.
