Terms of use
Mostly about the free calculators, because they are the part of this site that gives you numbers you might act on.
These terms in short
- The calculators work out what the rules say, using the figures you type in. They are not advice about your business.
- They cannot see your contract, your paperwork, or whether what you typed is right.
- We have checked them against HMRC's own published examples.
- If a number matters, check it before you act on it. If it is a big number, ask somebody who can look at your actual situation.
- We are bookkeepers. We are not tax advisers, and we do not claim to be any kind of regulated adviser.
What the calculators are
Four free tools. The CIS deduction calculator works out the deduction on a subcontractor invoice. The reverse charge checker goes through the conditions for the VAT domestic reverse charge and tells you which way the rules point for the invoice you describe. The mileage calculator works out what you can claim for business miles at HMRC's rates. The CIS deadline reminders send you an email before each monthly deadline if you ask for one.
The calculators and the checker apply published HMRC rules to the figures and answers you give them. The CIS calculator has been checked against the worked examples in HMRC's own guide, CIS340 Appendix D, and gives the same figures. The mileage calculator has been checked against HMRC's own worked examples too.
What they are not
They are not tax advice, accountancy advice, or a substitute for looking at your actual contracts and records. We are a bookkeeping service, not tax advisers, and nothing on this site is advice about your particular circumstances.
A calculator cannot see your paperwork. It cannot tell whether the materials figure you typed is right, whether a subcontractor's status is what you believe it is, or whether the work is inside the scheme at all. Where a tool does not have enough to answer safely, it stops and says so rather than guessing. "This needs a person" is a real answer, not a failure.
Relying on the output
You are responsible for the figures you put in and for what you do with the answer. We take care to make the tools accurate and we will fix anything that turns out to be wrong, but we cannot accept liability for a decision made on a free tool that could not see your situation.
Nothing here limits our liability for anything the law does not allow us to limit, including fraud, or death or personal injury caused by negligence.
Rules change, and so does this site
Tax rules change. If a tool gives you an answer that looks out of date, treat it with caution and tell us. It would mean we have fallen behind, and we want to know.
Getting it wrong
If you think a tool has given a wrong answer, tell us and we will look at it properly.
Email [email protected] or use the contact form.
The rest of the site
The guides explain how CIS, VAT and the other topics we cover work in general terms. They name their sources, but they are general information, not advice about you. How we handle personal data is covered in our privacy notice.
